WORLD BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY 25.04.2024 | 31 On 20 October, the whole world celebrates World Breast Cancer Day — this is not just a date on the calendar, but an annual reminder of the importance of preventive examinations, early diagnosis and self-care. To mark this day, the ZDRAVO clinic in Mykolaiv is running a preventive campaign that will last until 24 October inclusive. As part of the initiative, patients can undergo breast examinations at a discount: 🔹 Breast ultrasound + gynaecologist consultation — only 978 UAH instead of 1150 UAH 🔹 Breast ultrasound + gynaecologist consultation + mammologist consultation — only 1318 UAH instead of 1550 UAH The experienced doctors at the ZDRAVO clinic — gynaecologists and mammologists with many years of practice — conduct examinations with particular sensitivity and professionalism. A comprehensive examination allows even the smallest changes in the mammary glands to be detected, which is especially important for the early diagnosis of tumours. The relevance of the problem: breast cancer — the number one threat to women Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Every year, more than 2.3 million new cases are recorded worldwide, and this number is growing. In Ukraine, the situation remains tense: thousands of women hear this diagnosis every year. The most frightening thing is that in 30-40% of cases, the tumour is detected at a late stage, when the chances of a full recovery are significantly lower. However, if the disease is detected at stage I, the survival rate exceeds 90%. That is why regular preventive examinations are not a whim, but a necessity. When to go for an examination? Experts recommend that every woman undergo an ultrasound of the mammary glands once a year, and after the age of 40, a mammogram as well. The examination should be carried out even in the absence of complaints. However, there are high-risk groups that should be particularly vigilant: age over 40; hereditary predisposition (cases of cancer in the family); hormonal disorders, mastopathy, polycystic ovary syndrome; obesity, diabetes, smoking; prolonged stress, low physical activity; late first birth or no children. If you belong to one of these groups, preventive ultrasound should become a regular habit for you. Symptoms that require immediate attention In many cases, breast cancer does not show any symptoms in its early stages. Therefore, self-examination of the breasts (once a month after menstruation) and visits to the doctor are your responsibility. Signs to look out for: the appearance of a lump or nodule; deformation, asymmetry, retraction of part of the breast; discharge from the nipple (especially bloody); change in skin colour (redness, peeling, ‘orange peel’); enlargement of the axillary lymph nodes; breast pain that is not related to the menstrual cycle. If you experience even one of these symptoms, you should see a gynaecologist or mammologist immediately. Why do women avoid examinations? Unfortunately, even when informed, many women put off seeing a doctor. The main reasons are: Fear: finding out about a bad diagnosis is scary. But in reality, not knowing is scarier. Shame: breast examinations require trust in the doctor. That is why the ZDRAVO clinic pays special attention to creating a comfortable atmosphere. Lack of time: in the daily hustle and bustle, it is easy to forget about yourself. However, a visit to the doctor is only an hour of your time, which can give you years of life. Most tumors in the early stages do not cause pain or visible changes, but they are well detected through instrumental diagnostics. Why combine ultrasound with a consultation with a gynecologist and mammologist? The condition of the breasts is closely related to a woman’s hormonal and reproductive health. A comprehensive approach allows all risk factors to be evaluated simultaneously, so it is optimal to visit a mammologist and gynecologist together with instrumental examination. Why should check-ups be more regular after age 40? The likelihood of malignant changes increases with age, and mammography complements ultrasound in detecting small formations. How does heredity affect an individual screening schedule? A family history of cancer requires an earlier start and more frequent monitoring. Why are women with endocrine disorders considered at higher risk? Hormonal imbalances can create conditions for pathological changes in breast tissue. How does self-examination help detect problems earlier? Regular palpation creates a “map of normal” for your own breasts, making it easier to notice even minor changes. What role does psychological comfort play during an examination? Trust in the doctor reduces tension and allows the examination to be conducted more thoroughly and without haste.
