Doppler head vessels

Doppler of the head vessels (transcranial Doppler) is a non-invasive ultrasound examination that allows assessing the state of blood flow in the main arteries and veins of the brain. The method is based on the use of the Doppler effect, which makes it possible to measure the speed and direction of blood flow, detect stenoses, spasms, thrombosis, aneurysms or venous outflow disorders.

At ZDRAVO clinic, this examination is performed using modern expert-class devices, which ensures high diagnostic accuracy even at the initial stages of vascular pathologies.

When is Doppler ultrasonography of the head vessels required?

The examination is recommended for the following symptoms and conditions

  • chronic headaches or dizziness
  • frequent episodes of fainting or "darkening of the eyes"
  • tinnitus, a feeling of pulsation in the head
  • unstable blood pressure
  • previous stroke or microstroke (TIA)
  • suspected impaired venous outflow from the skull
  • vascular dementia, memory or cognitive decline
  • history of traumatic brain injury
  • vegetative-vascular dystonia, panic attacks
  • follow-up after treatment of vascular diseases

Doppler can also be part of a preventive examination for patients with hypertension, atherosclerosis or diabetes mellitus.

Contraindications to the procedure

Transcranial Doppler is a safe method, so there are no absolute contraindications. Relative limitations may include

  • severe traumatic injuries of the skull in the scanning area
  • serious condition of the patient that does not allow performing the examination in the standard position
  • individual intolerance to the gel or contact with damaged skin

In case of such restrictions, the doctor may recommend alternative imaging methods, such as MRI angiography.

How Doppler examination of head vessels is performed

The patient takes a lying or semi-sitting position. The doctor applies a small amount of gel to the areas of the skull through which ultrasound scanning can be performed (the so-called "acoustic windows"): temporal areas, supraorbital area, and the back of the head.

The procedure takes 20-30 minutes. During the examination, the specialist assesses

  • patency of the middle, anterior and posterior cerebral arteries
  • blood flow rate and symmetry of pulsation
  • presence of vascular stenoses, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations
  • efficiency of venous outflow

The examination is painless and does not require invasive intervention.

Preparation for Doppler sonography of head vessels

No special preparation is required, but to obtain the most reliable results, you should follow a few recommendations:

  • refrain from caffeine, energy drinks, smoking and alcohol 12 hours before the procedure
  • avoid physical activity before the examination
  • do not use cosmetics or creams in the temple area on the day of examination
  • bring results of previous ultrasound or MRI (if available)

Patients taking blood pressure lowering medications or vascular drugs should inform the doctor before the scan.

Related services and doctors to see

Depending on the results of the examination, the doctor may recommend additional consultations or examinations:

  • Consultation with a neurologist - in case of suspected cerebrovascular disease
  • Dopplerography of the vessels of the neck - for a complete assessment of the blood supply to the brain
  • Ultrasound of the heart and daily blood pressure monitoring (Holter)
  • MRI or CT scan of the brain
  • Tests for lipid profile, coagulogram, homocysteine
  • Consultation with a cardiologist or angiologist

These examinations and consultations can be carried out at the ZDRAVO clinic at a convenient time without leaving the medical centre.

Why you should choose ZDRAVO

At the ZDRAVO clinic, you get not just a procedure, but an accurate and affordable diagnosis under the supervision of experienced specialists. We use modern equipment that allows us to detect vascular disorders at an early stage. An integrated approach, short timeframes and comfortable conditions create an environment where patients can trust and receive effective care.

Faq about Doppler sonography of head vessels

1. How does Doppler of head vessels differ from MRI?

Doppler allows you to evaluate the function of blood vessels in real time - the speed, direction and patency of blood flow. MRI provides a static image of the structure of blood vessels and tissues. Both methods often complement each other.

2. Do I need a doctor's referral to undergo Doppler scan of the head vessels?

No, you can undergo the examination at your own request. However, if you have symptoms or chronic diseases, it is better to consult a neurologist first.

3. How accurate is the method?

Transcranial Doppler is a highly accurate method of visualising blood flow dynamics. In combination with Doppler of the neck vessels, it provides the most complete clinical picture.

4. How long does the procedure take?

Usually 20-30 minutes. You will receive the results immediately or on the same day, depending on the format of the examination.

5. Is it possible to undergo Doppler with high blood pressure?

Yes, it is even necessary. Arterial hypertension is one of the main indications for this study, as it affects the vascular state of the brain.

6. Is the method suitable for children or the elderly?

Yes, the procedure is safe for patients of any age and has no radiation exposure. It is performed even in cases of post-stroke rehabilitation or in children with neurological complaints.
