Intranasal injection

What is an intranasal injection and when is it used?

Intranasal injection is a method of local administration of medicines directly into the nasal mucosa. This approach ensures a high concentration of the active substance in the focus of pathology, without burdening the gastrointestinal tract and general circulation. The procedure is actively used in otolaryngology for the treatment of chronic and acute diseases of the ENT organs, as well as in neurology, endocrinology and even psychiatry to deliver certain types of drugs through the blood-brain barrier.

Indications for intranasal injection

The method is used as a part of complex treatment in the following cases

  • chronic sinusitis, rhinitis, polypoid nasal changes
  • adenoiditis in children and adults
  • allergic rhinitis, including seasonal exacerbations
  • preparation for or recovery from surgical interventions in the nasal cavity
  • administration of hormonal, anti-inflammatory or antihistamines
  • treatment of certain forms of neuropathy (including facial neuralgia)

Due to the direct effect on the nasal mucosa, the injection allows for rapid reduction of swelling, reduction of inflammation and breathing relief.

When it is not recommended to perform the procedure

Although the method is considered safe, there are a number of contraindications for which an intranasal injection is not prescribed:

  • individual intolerance to the drug
  • acute infections with fever
  • active nosebleeds or a tendency to it
  • injuries or unhealed postoperative changes in the mucosa
  • severe blood clotting disorders
  • mental disorders with impaired cooperation with the patient

At ZDRAVO clinic, a consultation and examination by a doctor is mandatory before each procedure.

How an injection into the nasal cavity is performed

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under sterile conditions. The patient is placed in a comfortable position, with the head slightly tilted back. The healthcare professional treats the mucous membrane with an antiseptic, and, if necessary, applies local anaesthesia in the form of a spray or gel. Then the drug is injected into the submucosal layer with a thin needle or a special applicator. The procedure lasts 10-15 minutes.

After the injection, the patient is recommended to stay in the clinic for 20 minutes to monitor the body's reaction.

How to prepare for an intranasal injection

Preparation is minimal, but some recommendations increase the effectiveness:

  • do not use vasoconstrictor drops 2-3 hours before the procedure
  • avoid physical activity immediately before the injection
  • refrain from eating 1-2 hours before the session (especially if you are prone to nausea)
  • inform the doctor about all medications taken, allergies, chronic diseases

FAQ about intranasal injection

1. What is the difference between an intranasal injection and ordinary nasal drops?

Drops act superficially, while the injection allows the drug to be delivered to the deeper layers of the mucosa, which provides a longer and more powerful effect.

2. What drugs are administered intranasally?

Depending on the indications, these can be glucocorticoids, antihistamines, vasoconstrictors or anti-inflammatory drugs.

3. Is this procedure painful?

The procedure is performed with or without local anaesthesia. Most patients feel only a slight pressure or tingling sensation.

4. Can the injection be given to children?

Yes, according to indications and with the permission of an ENT doctor. The ZDRAVO clinic provides conditions for the safe performance of the procedure in children.

5. How many procedures do I need to undergo?

The number is determined individually. Sometimes one injection is enough, in other cases, a course of 2-3 procedures is prescribed.

6. Is there a risk of complications after a nasal injection?

Complications are rare. Sometimes there may be a short-term burning sensation or slight bleeding from the mucosa, which disappears on its own.
