Massage of the prostate gland
Prostate massage is a medical manipulation performed to stimulate the secretion of the prostate gland and improve its blood supply. The procedure is an important component of the complex treatment of chronic prostatitis, prostate congestion, and is also used for diagnostic purposes - taking a secretion for laboratory testing.
The procedure is performed exclusively on the prescription of a urologist, on an outpatient basis, taking into account individual indications and contraindications.
Indications for prostate massage
Prostate massage is recommended in the following cases
- chronic prostatitis (bacterial and non-bacterial)
- stagnant processes in the gland caused by physical inactivity or circulatory disorders
- prolonged absent or insufficient ejaculation
- to improve the effectiveness of drug therapy
- preparation for taking the prostate secretion for analysis
- Erectile dysfunction associated with congestion
The procedure is not used as a preventive measure, it is always a part of medical treatment with a clearly defined goal.
When massage is not recommended
Massage of the prostate gland is not performed in case of
- acute prostatitis or exacerbation of chronic prostatitis
- presence of purulent processes, prostate abscess
- stones in the prostate gland (calculous prostatitis)
- malignant or benign tumours in the pelvic area
- haemorrhoids, rectal fissures, proctitis
- severe general conditions, acute infections
A preliminary examination by a urologist and pelvic ultrasound helps to identify possible contraindications and avoid complications.
How the massage procedure works
The massage is performed rectally, through the anus. The patient is placed in a supine or standing position with a forward bend. The doctor wearing gloves and using a special gel gently inserts a finger into the rectum and palpates the prostate gland, performing a series of gentle presses from the sides to the centre. The procedure lasts 1-2 minutes.
As a rule, the sensations are not painful, but may be slightly uncomfortable. At the end, a secretion is released, which, if necessary, is collected for microscopic or bacteriological analysis.
How to prepare for a prostate massage
Preparation for the procedure includes
- cleansing of the rectum (soft enema 1-2 hours before the appointment)
- abstinence from urination for 1-2 hours (full bladder facilitates access to the gland)
- avoid eating 2-3 hours before the procedure
- warning the doctor about any chronic diseases or medications
Before the first massage, an ultrasound of the prostate and a consultation with a urologist are usually performed.
