Cardiac ultrasound (EchoCG)

Echocardiography (Echocardiography) is an ultrasound study of the heart, which allows you to assess its structure and function. This painless and informative method of research is a key in the diagnosis of many cardiologic diseases.

When is it necessary to have an ultrasound of the heart?

You should consider making an appointment for an echocardiogram if you are experiencing:

-Frequent chest pain, especially with exercise;

-Shortness of breath that occurs even with little activity or at rest;

-Constant fatigue, a feeling of tiredness;

-Heart rhythm disturbances - interruptions, palpitations;

-Fainting or conditions close to fainting.

How is the ultrasound of the heart?

The EchoCG procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis and takes about 30 minutes. The patient needs to lie on a couch, after which the doctor applies a special gel to the chest and conducts the sensor of the ultrasound machine on certain areas. Images of the heart in real time are displayed on the monitor, which allows the specialist to carefully study the structure and work of the heart.

Preparation for ultrasound of the heart

Proper preparation for cardiac ultrasound (EchoCG) helps ensure the most accurate and informative results. Here are the main recommendations that should be considered before the procedure:

  1. Wear comfortable and loose clothing that can be easily removed or pulled up to chest level, as you will need to expose your chest to access the heart. Avoid clothing with metal clasps or jewelry in the chest area.
  2. Avoid strenuous physical activity several hours before the study. Physical activity can affect your heart rate and blood flow, which can affect ultrasound results.
  3. Avoid consuming food and drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea, some soft drinks) 4-6 hours before the procedure.
  4. Do not smoke on the day of the procedure, as nicotine also affects the cardiovascular system.
  5. If you are taking any medications, especially heart medications, consult with your doctor about whether you need to stop taking your medications before your cardiac ultrasound. Some medications can affect heart function and should be eliminated before the procedure, but only on your doctor's recommendation.
  6. Try to avoid stress and emotional strain before the EchoCG. Nervous tension can affect the heart's performance.

What are the results of echocardiography?

Echocardiography helps doctors:

-Evaluate the size of the heart and the thickness and movement of its walls;

-Examine the condition and function of the heart valves;

-Detect the presence of fluid in the pericardium (heart sac);

-Evaluate the pressure in the pulmonary arteries and the efficiency of the heart muscle.
