Ultrasound of the uterus + ovaries + bladder

Ultrasound of the uterus, ovaries, and bladder is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the condition of female pelvic organs. This scan provides real-time imaging and helps detect inflammation, cysts, tumors, or structural abnormalities.

When Is Pelvic Ultrasound Recommended

The procedure is used for both routine screening and evaluation of specific symptoms. It is informative in cases of menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, abnormal discharge, or infertility.

Common indications for this ultrasound:

  • pelvic pain or discomfort
  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • suspected ovarian cysts or fibroids
  • bladder dysfunction or retention
  • infertility evaluation
  • monitoring IUD placement or treatment response

How the Procedure Is Performed

Depending on the clinical indication, the ultrasound may be performed transabdominally (through the abdomen) and/or transvaginally (through the vagina). A full bladder may be required for optimal imaging.

Examination includes:

  1. Assessment of the uterus: size, shape, endometrial thickness
  2. Visualization of ovaries: follicular activity, cysts, or masses
  3. Evaluation of the bladder: volume, wall thickness, residual urine
  4. Measurements and image documentation
  5. Verbal and written report by a doctor

The procedure takes 15–20 minutes and is completely painless.

Preparation for the Pelvic Ultrasound

Proper preparation ensures visibility of pelvic organs.

Before the scan:

  • For abdominal scan: drink 500–700 ml of water 1 hour before, don’t urinate
  • For transvaginal scan: come with an empty bladder
  • Avoid heavy meals 3–4 hours prior
  • Inform your doctor about menstruation or pelvic pain

Following these instructions helps achieve accurate diagnosis.

Contraindications and Limitations

Ultrasound is considered safe for most patients. However, some limitations or temporary contraindications exist.

Possible contraindications include:

  • severe vaginal bleeding (for transvaginal scan)
  • acute pelvic infection
  • recent pelvic surgery (consultation required)
  • incomplete bladder filling (may affect image quality)

All safety considerations are reviewed by the physician before the scan.
