Pelvic Ultrasound Examination Methods

Transabdominal Ultrasound

Transvaginal Ultrasound (for Women)

Transrectal Ultrasound (for Men)

How to Prepare for a Pelvic Ultrasound?

Preparation depends on the examination method recommended by your doctor.

Preparation for a Transabdominal Ultrasound

Drink 1–1.5 liters of still water 1–1.5 hours before the procedure;

Do not empty your bladder before the examination is completed;

Avoid carbonated beverages and foods that may cause bloating.

Preparation for a Transvaginal Ultrasound

• The bladder should be empty;
• Follow standard personal hygiene practices;
• Avoid using vaginal suppositories or tampons for several hours before the examination.

Preparation for a Transrectal Ultrasound

Mild bowel cleansing may be required, depending on your doctor’s recommendations.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The examination usually takes 15–25 minutes. The procedure is painless, does not require anesthesia, and involves no recovery period. After the examination, patients can immediately return to their normal daily activities.
