Women's checklist: what examinations to undergo to stay healthy
A gynecological examination is the only way to prevent the development of serious diseases of the female reproductive system. Everyone knows that it should be done regularly, but, unfortunately, not every woman follows this rule.
Remember, no matter what kind of lifestyle you lead, you need to visit a gynecologist once every six months to a year. Even if nothing bothers you, the menstrual cycle works like clockwork and has no negative hereditary factors. There are diseases that are completely asymptomatic in the early stages. For example, cervical cancer. But this disease is quickly detected by colposcopy and cytological examination. And a cancer diagnosed in the early stages is, without exaggeration, a life saved.
We asked gynecologists Oleksandra Podyma and Olga Koltok what mandatory diagnostics are required and how often a woman should undergo them to be sure she is healthy.
1. Colposcopy is an examination of the vaginal mucosa and cervix using a colposcope that magnifies the image. This examination allows to diagnose precancerous changes in the cervix. This procedure is carried out once a year - respectively, when a woman comes for an examination by a doctor.
2. PAP test (cervical cancer screening) is a very important test aimed at detecting precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix that can lead to cancer. Timely detection of changes in cells will help prescribe treatment and significantly reduce the risk of cancer. This screening should be done once a year.
3. Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This test helps to determine which microorganisms cause inflammation. Sexually transmitted infections. The main ones include: gonorrhea, syphilis, several dozen types of papillomavirus (HPV), herpes, chlamydia, etc. Timely tests help to detect an infection in the body and cure it. It is recommended to take such a test after unprotected sexual intercourse or when there are symptoms of disease.
4. Ultrasound of the mammary glands. According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, breast cancer is a leader among oncological diseases in Ukraine. In addition, the incidence of this type of oncology in our country is 45% higher than in other countries of the world. This situation is due to the fact that women go to doctors late and neglect breast screening. And this is despite the fact that with early diagnosis, breast cancer can be completely cured.
With the help of breast ultrasound, it is possible to detect the presence of neoplasms, as well as to “see” their size and determine their structure. Women are advised to do a breast self-examination every month and undergo an ultrasound once a year.
After 40 years, you need to undergo a mammogram. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to do it every 2 years. If there is a need for more frequent monitoring, an ultrasound of the mammary glands can be performed between mammography screenings.
5. Ultrasonography of pelvic organs. Along with a gynecological examination once a year, women are recommended to undergo a gynecological ultrasound, as it can help detect diseases such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids in the early stages. This type of diagnostics allows to assess the condition of the uterus and cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes with great accuracy, to detect or exclude pathologies.
