Thyroid Ultrasound – test

Thyroid Ultrasound

it is ZDRAVO турбуватися про своє здоров'я

A thyroid ultrasound is a modern diagnostic imaging method that allows physicians to assess the structure, size, and presence of pathological changes in thyroid tissue. The examination is safe, painless, and does not involve radiation exposure, making it suitable even for children and pregnant women.

At the ZDRAVO Medical Center in Mykolaiv, the examination is performed using high-resolution expert-class equipment, which allows the detection of even small nodular formations. Patients receive their results immediately after the procedure, along with a detailed medical report.

What does a thyroid ultrasound show?

    Ultrasound imaging allows evaluation of:

    • Size and volume of the thyroid gland
    • Tissue structure (homogeneous or diffuse changes)
    • Presence of nodules and cysts
    • Signs of inflammatory processes
    • Condition of regional lymph nodes
    • Blood supply characteristics (if Doppler ultrasound is used)

This method does not measure hormone levels, but it helps identify structural changes that may cause thyroid dysfunction.

When is a thyroid ultrasound recommended?

A thyroid ultrasound is indicated in cases of:

    • Feeling of a “lump” or pressure in the neck
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Changes in voice tone
    • Enlargement of the neck area
    • Sudden weight fluctuations
    • Fatigue and weakness
    • Palpitations or tremors
    • Abnormal TSH levels (high or low)

It is also used for monitoring previously detected nodules or for follow-up observation under an endocrinologist’s supervision.

What conditions can a thyroid ultrasound detect?

A thyroid ultrasound can help diagnose:

    • Diffuse goiter
    • Nodular goiter
    • Thyroid cysts
    • Thyroiditis (including autoimmune thyroiditis)
    • Adenomas
    • Suspicious formations requiring further examination

Early detection of thyroid changes allows timely treatment and helps prevent complications.

    How is the procedure performed?

The examination usually takes 10–20 minutes. The patient lies on a couch with the head slightly tilted back. The physician applies a special gel to the neck area and moves the ultrasound transducer to obtain images of the thyroid gland.

The procedure is painless, does not cause discomfort, and requires no recovery time afterward.

How to prepare for a thyroid ultrasound?

    No special preparation is required.

    Recommendations before the examination:

    • Do not apply creams or cosmetic products to the neck area
    • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the neck
    • Inform your doctor about any hormonal medications you are taking

In most cases, it is not necessary to stop ongoing treatment before the examination.

Do you need an ultrasound if your tests are normal?

Sometimes structural changes in the thyroid gland can develop even when hormone levels are within the normal range. Therefore, if symptoms are present or there is a family history of thyroid disease, a physician may recommend an ultrasound examination as a preventive diagnostic method.
